STUDENT COMMUNITY SERVICE

At Queen’s College, we are committed to developing well-rounded students who are not only academically, and/or athletically successful, but also socially responsible. One of the key components of our educational philosophy is community service, giving of one’s time, free of charge, to help individuals, organizations, or causes that benefit from your support.

Participating in community service fosters empathy, leadership, and a strong sense of civic responsibility. It also enhances college applications and is a requirement for both promotion and graduation, including the attainment of the Bahamas High School Diploma.

We encourage students to take advantage of summer breaks to begin completing some or all of their required community service hours. This is an excellent time to get involved in meaningful projects without added schoolwork.

Community Service Hour Requirements by Grade Level

These are the minimum hours required each year:

  • Grade 7: 5 hours
  • Grade 8: 5 hours
  • Grade 9: 10 hours
  • Grade 10: 10 hours
  • Grade 11: 15 hours
  • Grade 12: 20 hours

Why Is Community Service Important?

  • It is required for promotion to the next grade level.
  • It is a graduation requirement at Queen’s College.
  • It is needed to earn the Bahamas High School Diploma.
  • Colleges and universities look favorably on applicants who have completed meaningful community service.

Examples of Acceptable Community Service:

  • Supervised tutoring (without pay)
  • Assisting at school events (e.g., PTA meetings, Parents' Day, Comet Fest)
  • Participating in cleanups (school, beach, park, etc.)
  • Volunteering at organizations like the Red CrossHumane Society, or other community agencies

Important Reminders:

  • Each time community service is performed, students must have their Community Service Record Form completed by the supervisor. This includes:
  • Start and end times
  • Total hours completed
  • Name of the organization
  • Supervisor’s signature
  • A copy of the completed form must be submitted to the student’s grade-level counselor by April of the current school year.
  • The Community Service Record Form is attached to this email. Please ensure it is printed and taken to every service opportunity.

We encourage all students to take initiative and begin making a positive impact within their community. Not only does this fulfill a school requirement, but more importantly, it builds character, fosters gratitude, and helps shape responsible global citizens.

If you have any questions or need further clarification, please contact the High School Office or your grade-level counselor.
