The primary goal of the science curriculum is for all students to achieve scientific literacy. Students' must understand and be aware of their environment in order to make sense of a world flooded with scientific and technical information. Science is studied as a process, including the role of experimentation, the development of theories, and practical applications.

General Science (4 periods per week)

Students entering Queen’s College in Grade 7 are offered an introductory course in Science which encompasses basic concepts of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  This course follows the B.J.C. General Science Examination syllabus which students will take in Grade 8 as a part of our Acceleration Program. Those not able to follow the course at the accelerated pace or fail to achieve an A – C pass in the examination in Grade 8 are allowed to sit the B.J.C. General Science examination in Grade 9.

Health Science (2 periods per week)

Students entering Queen’s College in Grade 7 are offered an introductory course in Human Anatomy which covers basic concepts of the human physiological structure, body organs and systems, and life processes.  This course follows the B.J.C. Health Science Examination syllabus which students will take in Grade 8 as a part of our Acceleration Program. Those not able to follow the course at the accelerated pace or fail to achieve an A – C pass in the examination in Grade 8 are allowed to sit the B.J.C. Health Science examination in Grade 9.

Biology (6 periods per week)

Biology is a compulsory second-level science course for all Queen's College students. It is a three-year BGCSE programme that ends with students sitting the BGCSE Biology examination at either the core or extended level.

Advanced students are given the opportunity to sit their BGCSE Biology examination after two years of study using the Acceleration Programme.

The key aims of Queen’s College’s Biology programme are to:

-    Develop techniques for solving problems, through experiments, following scientific approach

-    Promote an awareness that the application of Science may be both beneficial and detrimental to the individual, the community and the environment

-    Promote an understanding of the biological factors in human health  and well being

-    Establish the foundation for further study of the subject beyond this level and for technological careers

In addition to formal yearly examinations, Biology also contains Assesses Practical work which is carried out over the three year of study. There are four areas of Skill development:

Skill A      Using and Organising Techniques, Apparatus and Materials

Skill B      Observing, Measuring and Recording

Skill C      Handling Experimental Observations and Data

Skill D      Planning, Carrying Out and Evaluating Investigations

Prerequisite: BJC General Science

Chemistry (6 periods per week)

Chemistry is an optional second-level BSCGE science course available at Queen's College. The aim of the BGCSE Chemistry programme is to provide opportunities for students to obtain knowledge of basic concepts and principles in Chemistry. Students learn to recognize the usefulness of the scientific method and to appreciate its application in other disciplines and everyday life.

The BGCSE Chemistry syllabus is followed with the expectation that students in Grade 12 would sit the external examination at either the core or extended level. The core syllabus is tested in Paper 1, 2 and 4 and taking these exams would allow a student to receive a C – G grade in BGCSE Chemistry. The extended syllabus is tested in Paper 3 and in order to obtain an ‘A’ or ‘B’ students must sit and pass papers 1, 2, 3, and 4. Paper 4 is a continuous assessment of the students in the laboratory for the three-year period of the course.

In addition to formal yearly examinations, Chemistry also contains Assesses Practical work which is carried out over the three year of study. There are four areas of Skill development:

Skill A    Using and Organising Techniques, Apparatus and Materials

Skill B    Observing, Measuring and Recording

Skill C    Handling Experimental Observations and Data

Skill D    Planning, Carrying Out and Evaluating Investigations

Prerequisite: BJC General Science

Physics (4 periods per week)

Physics is an optional second-level BSCGE science course available at Queen's College. This BGCSE course is designed for three years starting in Grade 10 and ending in Grade 12 with students sitting the national BGCSE Physics examination at either the core or extended level.

The aims of the Queen’s College Physic programme are:

-   to develop techniques for solving problems through experimentation

-   to follow the scientific approach by developing skills of observation, processing and interpretation of data

-   to encourage students to apply, quantitatively and qualitatively, their knowledge and understanding of physical principles to familiar and unfamiliar situations

-   to ensure that students follow instructions including safety procedures

-   to develop an appreciation of the scientific, social, economic, environmental and technological contributions and applications of Physics

-   to stimulate the interest and enjoyment of the environment through the study of Physics

In addition to formal yearly examinations, Physics also contains Assesses Practical work which is carried out over the three year of study. There are four areas of Skill development:

Skill A   Using and Organising Techniques, Apparatus and Materials

Skill B   Observing, Measuring and Recording

Skill C   Handling Experimental Observations and Data

Skill D   Planning, Carrying Out and Evaluating Investigations

Prerequisite: BJC General Science

Combined Science

Combined Science is a  BGCSE science course that covers second-level scientific concepts of biology, chemistry and physics. Only students who are taking or have completed the three science courses can apply to sit the BGCSE Combined Science Examination. The four Skill development practicals needed for the examination are collated from those that the student already completed in Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

Prerequisites: BJC General Science, BGCSE Biology, Physics and Chemistry
