Book
Week 2004
The
annual Book Week at Queen’s College Primary was celebrated
March 29th
through April 2nd, 2004 under the theme “Explore
New World’s – Read”. The event served to:
·
Develop
whole school thinking about books, reading and literacy
·
Stimulate
a love of books and reading
·
Promote
and develop community links with the local library archives,
print media, radio and television stations
·
Provide
students with the opportunity to meet people who work in the
world of books- authors, storytellers, poets, publishers and
librarians.
At the
special assembly to launch “Book Week” our guest speaker Mrs.
Portia Sands delighted the students with her unique gift of
storytelling as she shared her childhood experiences with the
primary school student.
The
talented Ms. Natasha Jones a Grade 6 teacher wrote and
directed a play called “The Orphan Book.” The play and its
message, “Reading widely is important to success in school,”
was well received by the entire audience.
Mrs.
Sharmane Miller author of “On Grandad’s Back” thrilled the
children by reading this exciting memoir of her enriching
relationship with her brother and grandfather.
During
the week Ms. A. Gibson, Principal, Mr. J. Foulkes, High School
teacher and Mrs. Y. Noronha former Headmistress of Queen’s
College read stories to the students. A most fun filled
afternoon was Bedtime Stories when all the first graders and
the teachers changed into their pajamas; took blankets and
favourite teddy bears and headed to the hall where they
listened to some favourite bedtime stories read by Mrs.
Gillian Thompson. Some students actually fell asleep.
On the
Book Week Fun-Day students and teachers came to school dressed
in costumes depicting their favourite storybook character.
During the parade Conch Salad Cathy made a grand appearance,
and delighted the crowd as she interviewed students and
teachers about their costumes. She left us with the thought,
“If you want to know how to read, you must learn how to read”.
An added attraction to the parade was the Bagpiper all the way
from Scotland who led the parade as the storybook characters
followed.
The Book Fair conducted by Logos
Bookstore was a huge success. During this time the students
bought over five hundred books. Excitement permeated the
library as students from the Early Learning Center to Grade 6
purchased books that would the commence their journey to
explore new worlds. The entire week was filled with excitement
and recommitment to reading. We congratulate our Librarian;
Mrs. Veronica Roberts for providing our students with a wealth
of opportunities to travel to new and different worlds through
literature.
