Our
school has a well-stocked library of approximately 5300 books,
Internet access and a full time teaching librarian. Our
students look forward to their weekly library visits where
they listen to, and discuss literature and learn library and
research skills. Every week, children may borrow a fiction or
non-fiction book from the library selected from a wide range
of titles. Reference books are also available in the library
and there are special collections of books by Caribbean and
Bahamian authors. The library is made available to students
for research during recess periods, and is also a home for the
Chess, Crochet and Etiquette clubs.
Students
in all grades are encouraged to read widely from a list of
recommended books during their summer vacation and these books
are may be purchased at a local bookstore. Book swaps are
arranged so that students can exchange books that they have
read, and all students are invited to purchase a book for the
school to celebrate their birthday. Parents are also invited
to ‘Adopt a Book’ and contribute to our library.
Book
Week is an annual event in the Primary School and is designed
to promote in our students a love of books, reading and
literacy. Every opportunity is taken to develop links with
local libraries, archives, art galleries and radio and T.V.
stations. Students are given the opportunity to meet people
who work in the world of books: authors, illustrators, poets,
publishers, songwriters and librarians.
Our
library is always buzzing with activities, and we are truly
proud that that our Primary School library is a ‘Central
Hub for Independent Learning and Discovery’,
C.H.I.L.D.
