BAISS Track and Field Meet 2008

We would like to extend our sincerest congratulations to the Queen’s College Comets track team, who performed so magnificently in the BAISS Championships last week. Their rise has been meteoric and worthy of true praise. In 2004 they recorded a position of 6th with just 390 points. Each year since then they have improved so much so, that in 2008 they were 2nd for the third consecutive year and recorded a ‘points’ total of 1077; very nearly 3 times greater than their score in 2004. At that time they were also over 700 points behind the lead school, SAC, who have never been beaten in the last 20 years. This year 186 points separated the two teams, so the gap gets ever closer!

We would like to congratulate SAC on their win and also recognize the sportsmanship of both sides. It was evident that SAC were relieved to win by their first time ever public display of happiness. Their lap of honour was closely followed by a QC’s lap of appreciation to its athletes. Both sides then met at the ‘finish line’ and had a very friendly ‘faceoff’. This was testament to the fact that competition can bring out the best of performances and also the best of sportsmanship, without the threat of bodily injury. This is further testament to QC’s ‘Peace Begins With You’ campaign.

QC’s success comes down to great performances coupled with inspiring support from the rest of the QC family. The team had tremendous backing over the 3 days from a cheerleading group, and the whole school came out in green, to cheer and support on the last day. With such a team unity it is difficult to single out any individual athletes, however, all teams need leaders and Sparkyl Cash, (6 Golds from 6 events), Aaron Wilmore (6 Golds from 6 events), and Alexander Marshal (3 Golds from 3 field events), topped an impressive array of performances from the QC athletes. They led from the front and acted as true statesmen and role models. Well done QC and keep up the hard work!!!
