The core
goal of the Queen’s College Music
Department is to produce
complete musicians, that is, musicians who
read and play fluently and appreciate different styles of
music.
All
music classes are divided into two parts – theory and
practical.
Grade 7
(3 lessons per week)
All
students in Grade 7 must study Music as
a part of a rotational ‘Carousel Programme’ within Creative
Art courses (Art, Music, Home Economics, Craft, and Sewing).
Grade 7 Music students follow the Royal School of Music Theory
Syllabus in Grade 1. Students who receive 66% and above will
be recommended to sit the Royal School of Music Grade 1 Theory
Examination in March of their Grade 7 year.
The
practical aspect of Grade 7 us divided into three sections:
music appreciation, recorder playing and singing.
Materials Needed: Theory Workbook, Manuscript Notebook, Do It
Play the Recorder Book 1 and a recorder.
At Grade
8, having experienced all of Queen’s College’s Creative Arts
programmes in Grade 7, students select Music as their Creative
Arts Option. This is a two-year programme in which students
follow the Royal Schools of Music Theory syllabus in Grade 2,
3 and 4. All students are required to sit the theory Exam in
March of each grade level.
The
practical aspect of Grade 8 is divided into two sections; the
playing of a woodwind or brass instrument and singing.
The
practical aspect of Grade 9 is divided into three sections:
playing a woodwind or brass instrument, singing and hand
chimes.

Theory Workbook and AB Guide to Music Part 1
This is
a three-year programme that students select as one of their
Optional Courses in at the end of Grade 9. Students will
follow the national BGCSE Music Syllabus and are required to
sit the BGCSE Music Examination at the end of Grade 12.
The
practical aspect of Grade 10 and 11 is the playing of a
woodwind or brass instrument.
The
practical aspect of Grade 12 is the preparation of a piece of
music for the Practical Component of their BGCSE exam, which
is worth 50% of the final BGCSE grade.
