The core goal of the Queen’s College Music Department is to produce complete musicians, that is, musicians who read and play fluently and appreciate different styles of music.

All music classes are divided into two parts – theory and practical.

Grade 7 (3 lessons per week)

All students in Grade 7 must study Music as a part of a rotational ‘Carousel Programme’ within Creative Art courses (Art, Music, Home Economics, Craft, and Sewing). Grade 7 Music students follow the Royal School of Music Theory Syllabus in Grade 1. Students who receive 66% and above will be recommended to sit the Royal School of Music Grade 1 Theory Examination in March of their Grade 7 year.

The practical aspect of Grade 7 us divided into three sections: music appreciation, recorder playing and singing.

Materials Needed: Theory Workbook, Manuscript Notebook, Do It Play the Recorder Book 1 and a recorder.

Grade 8 & 9 (3 lessons per week)

At Grade 8, having experienced all of Queen’s College’s Creative Arts programmes in Grade 7, students select Music as their Creative Arts Option. This is a two-year programme in which students follow the Royal Schools of Music Theory syllabus in Grade 2, 3 and 4. All students are required to sit the theory Exam in March of each grade level.

The practical aspect of Grade 8 is divided into two sections; the playing of a woodwind or brass instrument and singing.

The practical aspect of Grade 9 is divided into three sections: playing a woodwind or brass instrument, singing and hand chimes.

Materials Needed: Theory Workbook and AB Guide to Music Part 1

Grade 10, 11 & 12 (2 lessons per week)

This is a three-year programme that students select as one of their Optional Courses in at the end of Grade 9. Students will follow the national BGCSE Music Syllabus and are required to sit the BGCSE Music Examination at the end of Grade 12.

The practical aspect of Grade 10 and 11 is the playing of a woodwind or brass instrument.

The practical aspect of Grade 12 is the preparation of a piece of music for the Practical Component of their BGCSE exam, which is worth 50% of the final BGCSE grade.

Materials Needed: Manuscript Note Book
