The Art & Design course provides the opportunity of personal expression, analytical reasoning and self-directed learning. Through both the theoretical studies and the personal development of practical skills the course should lead to as awareness and appreciation of the interdependence of Art and Design and the individual. It is therefore, especially concerned with the development of visual perceptions and aesthetic experiences and the broadening of cultural horizons.

 

Grade 7 (2 lessons per week)

As an Introduction to the CREATIVE ARTS, Grade 7’s will participate in a carousel, rotating between Home Economics and Art. Each carousel will be for a set period of ten weeks.

Part One – Basic Art skills, understanding and knowledge.

Part Two – Making three dimensional objects

 

Grade 8 (3 lessons per week)

In Grade 8 students will begin the two-year Programme of Study for the Bahamas Junior Certificate. Students will be introduced to all components and shall acquire an understanding, knowledge and skills in preparation for    Grade 9.

Part One – Drawing/Painting from Observation

Part Two – Interpretative Study

Part Three – Graphic Design

Part Four – Craft Study

 

Grade 9 (3 lessons per week)

Students must complete two coursework assignments to submit to the Ministry of Education, as part of the Bahamas Junior Certificate. The second part is the Art B.J.C. Examination.

 

Grade 10 (3 lessons per week)

Students wishing to pursue the BGCSE Art and Design course must have an A – C BJC grade in the same subject. Grade 10 is a foundation year during which students are introduced to all components of the programme. Through practical assignments students should be able to grasp a firm understanding of the skills and standards to be attained, in preparation for Grade 11.

Component One – Drawing/Painting from Observation

Component Two – Interpretative Study

Component Three – Graphic Design

Component Four – Art and Design Appreciation

Component Five – Creative Craft

 

Grade 11 (2 lessons per week)

By now all Grade 11 students should have a thorough understanding of the skills required for each component of the Art and Design programme. Students will select one component and start on their BGCSE Art coursework assignments.

 

Grade 12 (2 lessons per week)

Coursework is the priority for Grade 12 – students feverishly work towards completing and perfecting their Art and Design pieces. The department allows Grade 12 students to listen to respectable music during lessons to ease the stress of coursework and to make this final year as enjoyable as possible.
